The Two Decades of the Polish Community in Northern Ireland

Local Poles

The 1st of May 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of Polish people gaining access to the labour markets in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, following the exercise of their rights to free movement as part of the European Union. Over the past two decades, the Polish community has become the largest and most thriving part of Northern Ireland, with around 25,000 members making significant contributions across all sectors of the local economy. Many Polish people have chosen to establish their lives here, enriching the cultural heritage of Northern Ireland. The second generation of Poles, born and raised in Northern Ireland, now represent the future of this place with hopeful aspirations for the years to come. To commemorate this special day, we have created a short video showcasing the vibrant tapestry of the Polish community in Northern Ireland. After two decades, we can proudly say that we are local Poles, truly integrated into the fabric of Northern Ireland.

PL20NI Project

The PL20NI project, initiated in October 2023 marks a significant effort to delve into the intricacies of the Polish community in Northern Ireland since 2004. Through various research initiatives, workshops, public events, storytelling, and the creation of an exhibition and publication, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the Polish presence in the region. The overarching goal for us is to not only document the history and heritage of the Polish community in Northern Ireland, but also to explore the impact and interactions with local communities over the past two decades. By shedding light on these dynamics, we seek to foster greater understanding and strengthen relationships between the various groups. Through the collection and promotion of stories on this website, we aspire to create a virtual library that celebrates the rich tapestry of experiences and contributions of the local Poles and its allies in Northern Ireland.
